Wireless Thermostats
Wireless Receiver (single channel)
In short
A wireless receiver is the switch its thermostat (stat) works by radio. Its terminals: E, L, N, 1, 2, 3, 4. Units based on makers’ products sit under it in the parts list, such as the Drayton Digistat+RF and the Drayton Lifestyle RFPT.

If this is your home: this page is written for heating engineers. Mains wiring and gas appliances are not DIY jobs; call a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas, leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
What it is
A WIRELESS RECEIVER is the switch its thermostat (stat) works by radio.
Inside is a CHANGEOVER switch, fed from the live (L). Central heating on (CH ON), terminal 2, is live while the thermostat calls. Central heating off (CH OFF), terminal 1, is live while it is satisfied.
The numbers are this simulator's own. A branded receiver prints its own, so land each wire by the printed function:
- Many put the common on 1 and the call on 3. Many are volt-free.
Terminals
| Terminal | What it is for | On the Combi example |
|---|---|---|
| E (Earth) | The earth (E) PARKING SCREW. It holds the cable's earth core, in green-and-yellow sleeving. The unit itself does not use it. | Combi Boiler E |
| L (Live) | The live (L) in. It feeds the radio and the changeover switch. | Combi Boiler L |
| N (Neutral) | The neutral (N). | Combi Boiler N |
| 1 | Central heating off (CH OFF): live while the thermostat (stat) is satisfied. | — |
| 2 | Central heating on (CH ON): live while the thermostat calls. It goes to the heating valve's motor. | Combi Boiler RT |
| 3 | Not used. | — |
| 4 | Central heating on (CH ON): the same call, on a second contact. | — |
Read from the wired example circuits: Combi boiler with a wireless thermostat. A wiring-centre block carries whatever is landed on it; the numbers are the habit the lessons teach.
What the meter reads
With its live (L) and neutral (N) on, it listens to its thermostat (stat). 1 is live while the thermostat is satisfied, and 2 and 4 while it calls. Never both.
Without its own live and neutral, it shows NO POWER and no flame, and its switch rests on 1.
Units based on makers’ products
In the parts list these sit under the Wireless Receiver. Each is the simulator’s own unit, simplified for teaching, and may differ from the product it is based on: on site, read the unit’s own instructions. DrawWarm is not part of these makers and is not approved by them.

Call-outs with this part on the path
- No heating: hot water fine, radiators cold
“Hot water's fine but the radiators are stone cold, whatever I do with the thermostat.”

Read the explanation
- Wiring a wireless thermostat to a combi boiler: the receiver, the link and the room-stat terminals
A combi needs only its supply and a call on its room-stat terminals. The receiver’s relay replaces the link; check volt-free against mains-switched first.
