Quick Jobs
In short
Straight to one job on the loadable example circuits - no course to work through. Prove dead, test polarity, find and replace a faulty zone valve, add a second zone, replace the programmer with a wireless dual-channel control on an S-Plan or Y-Plan, wire a wireless thermostat to a combi, add a frost thermostat, fit a digital room thermostat, swap a dead programmer for a new branded unit. Each stands alone: 10 to 23 minutes.
The jobs
Safe isolation: prove dead before you start
On the customer's S-Plan: prove the two-pole tester, confirm the supply is live, isolate, prove every conductor dead, then prove the tester again.
How it opensGS38 is the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) guidance on test equipment. It asks for the tester to be proved before and after.
Polarity test on a new boiler
Test the polarity of a new boiler's supply at the wiring centre and at the boiler, find live and neutral crossed, and put them right.
Find a faulty zone valve and replace it
Prove with two readings that a zone valve's motor has failed, then fit a new valve and prove the repair.
Add a second heating zone (S-Plan Plus)
A loft conversion: add a second room thermostat (stat) and a second 2-port valve to the customer's S-Plan, with the new valve's orange on the boiler's switched live block.
Replace the programmer on an S-Plan with a wireless dual-channel control
Take the wired programmer and room thermostat (stat) off the S-Plan Wired example, and fit this simulator's wireless dual-channel receiver and thermostat. The S-Plan Wireless example is the result.
Replace the programmer on a Y-Plan with a wireless dual-channel control
The same job on the Y-Plan System example, and why the receiver needs a hot water OFF (HW OFF) terminal for the heating to work on its own.
Wire a wireless thermostat to a combi
The Combi Wireless Template: a combi, a fused spur, and this simulator's wireless thermostat (stat) and receiver on the wall. Wire the supply, feed the receiver, and give the combi its switched live.
Add a frost thermostat to an S-Plan
Fit a frost thermostat (stat) to the customer's S-Plan, so that the heating protects a boiler in a cold garage, even with the programmer off. It takes a permanent live.
Swap the room thermostat for a digital (volt-free) one
Replace the customer's 230 V room thermostat (stat) with a battery digital stat: a common (COM) and a normally open (NO) contact, with no live and no neutral of its own.
Swap an old programmer for one based on the Honeywell ST9400C
The customer's programmer, based on the Horstmann Diadem 425, has died. Read its terminals, isolate, take it off, fit one based on the Honeywell ST9400C, and land each core where the new unit wants it.

You will learn to
- Prove dead and test polarity before touching a wiring centre
- Find a failed zone valve with two readings and replace it
- Add a heating zone to a working S-Plan
- Replace a wired programmer and room stat with a wireless dual-channel control on S-Plan and Y-Plan
- Wire a wireless thermostat's receiver to a combi
- Fit a frost stat or a volt-free digital stat
- Swap a dead programmer for a branded replacement unit, landing its cores where the new unit wants them
Units based on makers’ products
The units in these lessons are the simulator’s own, simplified for teaching. Each is based on a maker’s product and may differ from it: on site, read the unit’s own instructions.
